In November 2002, a local radio station started talking about the need for a support group for mothers that had sons or daughters being sent to war. The response was overwhelming. At the first meeting several hundreds of not only moms, but fathers, family members and friends of those serving in the military gathered to learn more about becoming a member of the Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. military support group.
In March 2003 the first Chapter was Chartered in Oklahoma as the Oklahoma Chapter 1 of Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. Although it was based in Tulsa, the decision to name it Oklahoma Chapter 1 was made so people throughout Oklahoma would have a chapter to join if there was no chapter in their town or area.
The main focus of the Oklahoma Chapter 1 is to send Freedom Boxes to our troops serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and on any hostile foreign soil. These boxes are just a small way to say “thank you for your sacrifice and patriotism to our nation” and to let the troops know there will always be people back home thinking about them and praying for them. We give support to our veterans as well as giving moral support to each other. We attend the funerals to pay respect to those that have given the ultimate sacrifice for our country by giving their lives so we can continue to enjoy our freedoms. We attend deployment ceremonies and re-deployment ceremonies as another way to say thank you for all you do.
